EXPRESS ENTRY TRADES DRAW: CRS CUT-OFF DROPS TO 476 FOR SKILLED TRADES CANDIDATES
Canada has held its second Express Entry draw of 2026 for candidates with skilled trades experience. The round took place on October 1 and set the minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score at 476, one point lower than the previous trades draw earlier this year. For skilled tradespeople, it is a reminder that a targeted category can open a door that general draws do not.
Draw results at a glance
The draw was open to candidates in the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Canadian Experience Class and the Federal Skilled Trades Program. IRCC reported 3,500 invitations, 500 more than in the April round. When several candidates have the same score as the cut-off, the tie-breaking rule decides who is invited: only profiles submitted before the date and time above were considered.
The Express Entry pool held 229,904 candidates as of September 27, and IRCC has now issued 135,215 invitations across 59 draws in 2026.
What is a category-based draw?
Most Express Entry rounds invite the highest-ranking candidates regardless of occupation. Category-based draws work differently. IRCC chooses a category that reflects Canada's labour needs, such as trades, health care or French-language ability, and invites candidates in the pool who meet the category criteria, ranked by CRS score. Being in the category does not guarantee an invitation. You still need a score at or above the cut-off.
Who can qualify for the trades category
To be considered for a trades draw, a candidate must already be eligible for one of the three Express Entry programs and also meet the category's work experience rule. Based on IRCC's category-based selection information, that rule is:
• At least 12 months of full-time work experience, or an equivalent amount of part-time work, in the last three years.
• The experience must be in a single eligible trade occupation listed by IRCC.
• The months do not have to be continuous.
Worth knowing: the work experience requirement for the trades category was increased from six to twelve months in the February 2026 update. Candidates who were counting on the older rule should recheck their eligibility. The list of eligible occupations is set by IRCC and can change, so it should always be confirmed on the official category page before you update a profile.
Why a lower cut-off matters
A cut-off of 476 is well above what many candidates hold, so a trades draw should not be read as an easy path. But compared with what is often required in general draws, a targeted round lets candidates compete against others in their own field rather than against the entire pool. A one-point drop between rounds is small, yet it shows the score needed has been steady during 2026.
What to do if you are in the trades
• Check that your occupation and experience match the category exactly. Job duties must align with the occupation code, not just the job title.
• Keep your profile current. Language test results, work letters and credentials need to be valid when you are invited.
• Look for points you can still add. Improving language results, adding French ability, or securing a provincial nomination can all change your position.
• Prepare documents early. After an invitation, you have a limited window to submit a complete application.
• Consider provincial options. Many provinces actively seek tradespeople, and a nomination adds a significant number of CRS points.
Because category criteria and occupation lists are updated regularly, one small mismatch in your profile can mean the difference between being invited and being overlooked. A professional review before you rely on a category is a sound investment.
